elsh Assembly Government (WAG) has pledged £3.16 million to help support the development of the country's recycling sector.

The grant will be used by local authorities to purchase recycling machinery for materials that are not currently collected – such as carpets and mattresses.

Funding can also be used to improve current waste processing streams such as electronic equipment, household hazardous waste and street rubbish.

Jane Davidson, environment minister, claimed the new grant will help the country reach its target recycling rate of 70 per cent by 2025.

"This funding is a real boost for local authorities. It also demonstrates our commitment to reaching the ambitious targets we have set ourselves, and to delivering economic and environmental benefits to the whole of Wales," she said.

The WAG will also contribute £1 million to assist in the construction of a mixed plastics recycling facility in the country.
