The waste battery recycling rate has risen by over five per cent in the past three months, according to new figures.
Research from the Environment Agency has revealed that 16.15 per cent of waste batteries were recycled in the second quarter of 2010, compared to 9.15 per cent in the first three months of the year.
The increase in recycling rates could be driven by a new scheme which requires retailers who sell a large amount of batteries to offer in-store recycling services.
It was introduced on February 1st, meaning the second quarter is the first full period where shops were forced to process waste batteries.
The UK is currently on course to attain the target set by the Batteries Regulations for it to recycle an average of 10 per cent of batteries over the year.
The recycling rate for the first six months of 2010 is 12.58 per cent – having recycled 2,320.265 tonnes of batteries.
Typical Guttridge equipment used in the recycling industry includes; Conveyors – screw conveyors – chain conveyors – belt conveyors
