Farmers could boost profits and meat yield by simply updating their ventilation controls, it has been claimed.

Many farms may be using old technology but modern controllers can be more accurate and help reduce energy costs.

Hugh Crabtree, managing director of Reading-based Farmex, claimed it is not uncommon to find controllers that are more than 15 years old.

He told meattradenewsdaily.co.uk: "Typically, older controllers are located inside the piggery which means that components are much more likely to be corroded, worn out or simply not working properly.

"Analogue controls have been superceded by digital or micro-controllers, but the current generation of digital controllers are more accurate, more flexible and are easily upgraded."

By installing these controllers in the grower and finishing houses, farmers could improve temperature regulation and boost feed conversion and growth rates.

Furthermore, an animal's respiratory health could increase if the old system failed to stop huge temperature changes.
