A new yeast strain has been developed which claims to directly target the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
The human nutrition division of French firm Lesaffre had released the Lynside Pro GI+ strain which will be used in a wide array of bakery products, reports bakerysnacks.com.
A trial involving 179 IBS sufferers found that the product "noticeably reduces digestive discomfort after four weeks of consumption".
The new yeast could see a rise in the production of bakery products as no other strain has been shown to help relieve IBS.
Benoit Laplaize, Lesaffre's human care commercial and marketing director, revealed the firm had been working on the product for six years.
He told NutraIngredients: "It is difficult and complex to perform these kinds of trials because you are putting a living thing (the probiotic strain) into a living thing (the human or animal).
"But we are confident about this study and know that an ingredient without science is useless."
Professor Pierre Desreumaux of the University of Lille conduced the trial, in which volunteers were given 500mg of Lynside Pro GI+ per day for two months.
