Agricultural Policy (CAP) should support commercial farming rather than small-scale farms, it has been claimed.
The European Union (EU) will make proposals for the future of the CAP before the end of the year, with initial meetings suggesting the legislation will be geared towards helping family farms.
Peter Dawson, policy director for Dairy UK, claimed the new policy should promote efficient agriculture to support commercial Brutish farmers.
He said: "That model [proposed by the EU] is at odds with the development of UK agriculture which is turning towards commerical farming. The EU shouldn't be seeking to defend antiquated farming structures like small family farms."
The calls for greater efficiency among commercial farms could boost demand for industry machinery as farmers begin to produce goods on a large-scale.
European agriculture commisioner Dacion Ciolos will announce the plans for the CAP strategy after 2013 in November.
