stic recycling sector has been boosted by the increase in plastic bottle recycling rates.
Recoup, a recycling organisation, has revealed that that 45 per cent (260,000 tonnes) of all plastic bottles were collected by local authorities for recycling last year – an increase of six per cent compared to 2008.
The increase in rates could be driven by the greater awareness among consumers to recycle goods following a range of projects and initiatives by local authorities.
The majority of bottles were collected through kerbside recycling programmes, with over 215,000 tonnes of waste bottles taken in this way.
Marcel Arsand of Recoup claimed the preliminary figures highlight the growing importance of recycling in British society.
He said: "We are encouraged that there appears to be positive and steady progress in the UK, a reflection of the good work of all those involved across the local authority and waste management sectors, and of the course the consumers who are recognising the importance of recycling and playing their part."
