A new energy-from-waste plant is due to open in Doncaster in a welcome boost to the industry.

Pet food processing firm Prosper de Mulder (PDM) has begun constructing the £12 million facility which will use anaerobic digesters to convert local food waste into energy, reports doncasterfreepress.co.uk.

The firm aims to process around 50,000 tonnes of food waste a year and provide energy to the National Grid.

Phillip Simpson, commercial director of PDM, claimed the company has now resolved any issues the residents had with the plant.

He told the news provider: "The local community have every right to voice their concerns and we had extensive consultation process to listen to the concerns and address these issues.

"We are committed to being good neighbours and want to continue to have dialogue with local residents."

Doncaster Council backed the project as recycling rates will increase while more waste will be diverted from the landfill.
