A new recycling scheme has been launched across the UK which will use volunteers to help boost light bulb recycling rates.

The Community Bulb Recycling Alliance has been formed following a partnership between waste electricals processor Recolight and Cornish recycling organisation CoBRA.

Volunteers will collect used low-energy light bulbs from various retailers which hold a specially designed recycling receptacle.

These containers will then be taken to a central location before being collected by Recolight.

Low-energy light bulbs are set to become even more popular from 2012 as traditional incandescent light bulbs will be phased out over the next two years.

Lord Henley, waste and recycling minister, claimed consumers must recycle energy-efficient light-bulbs once they reach the end of their lifespan.

He said: "This initiative will enable people to take responsibility for light bulb recycling in their community and make the facilities much more widely available for householders to do so."
