Real ale is becoming increasingly popular in the UK as more women and younger drinkers begin to purchase the drink.

The Guardian has obtained the latest Good Beer Guide which reveals there are now over 700 real ale brewers in Britain – the highest number since the Second World War

Recent figures released by the British Beer and Pub Association also highlight the growth of the drink, with real ale representing 20.6 per cent of the UK beer market last year, a rise of 0.2 per cent compared to 2008.

Supermarkets have also noted the rise in real ale drinkers, with Tesco now stocking 330 more bottled ales than it did five years ago.

Ian Targett, Tesco's ale buying manager, claimed real ale has changed its image so it is more appealing to younger consumers.

"The growth in popularity of real ale in the last few years has been spectacular, with the greatest accolade being that it has started to achieve its holy grail of winning over a younger audience," he told the news provider.
