The plastics recycling industry has been boosted by Coca-Cola's plans to improve processing rates in the UK.

The firm does not use recycled PET (plastic used in drinks bottles) from the UK as it claims the quality is not good enough.

Currently, many authorities collect bottles alongside mixed plastics which reduces the overall standard of the PET.

Patrick McGuirk, Coca-Cola's European recycling director, has urged large companies to work with local authorities to achieve more consistent collections.

He revealed the firm are working with major UK reprocessors to enable them to produce more recycled PET.

Mr McGuirk said: "It is a growing industry, PET is a challenge but we will try to support the industry as it matures. We are looking at more direct intervention with the plastic reprocessors."

Coca-Cola is planning to use 25 per cent recycled PET across its range of products by 2025 – it currently uses around seven per cent.
