The Welsh livestock market has been given a much needed boost following calls to release European grain stocks in a bid to keep animal feed costs down.

The severe drought in Russia and Ukraine has led to the former banning all grain exports while the latter has significantly reduced its exports.

Animal feed prices in Wales have increased by around £25 a tonne as a result of the limited grain supply.

Gareth Vaughan, Farmers' Union of Wales (FUW) president, has urged the European Commission to release grain from its stores to curtail the rising cost of feed.

He said: "Consideration of releasing such stocks, to keep grain prices in check, has continued to gather apace within the European feed industry and some member states, particularly net grain importer Spain.

"I believe the UK government should also be demanding similar action to safeguard the immediate prospects of Welsh agriculture."

Wales is particularly susceptible to the rising costs of feed as its agricultural sector is dominated by livestock breeders.
