councilors are expected to give the go ahead for the expansion of a local quarry this week.

The Tong Farm Quarry in Bacup has requested to increase the size of its site by another 1.5 hectares (approximately three acres) of land to extract fireclay and shale from the ground.

According to the Lancashire Telegraph, the local council will grant planning permission if the quarry agrees to 49 conditions designed to alleviate the effect of the expansion.

In a report, members of Lancashire County Council's development control committee revealed that local residents are concerned over the impact of the move.

It said: "It is important to ensure that the site is appropriately restored without having an unacceptable adverse impact on the environment, the public highway and the amenity of residents of Bacup who live in close proximity to the site."

However, the committee confirmed that the benefits of the expansion outweigh the cons: "The extension would be small scale and would maintain an existing source of employment," it added.
