US firm Covanta Energy has unveiled plans for a new energy-from-waste plant in Scotland.

The company plans to process 300,000 tonnes of waste a year and generate 24MW of electricity and 23MW of thermal energy at the site in Drumshangie.

This would produce enough energy to power around 80,000 homes in the local area with renewable energy.

Malcolm Chilton, Covanta Energy's managing director, revealed it is the first time the firm has developed a project in Scotland.

He said: "It provides a cost efficient and environmentally friendly solution for the proportion of the area's waste which cannot sensibly be recycled and which has up until now been sent to landfill.

"The heat output should also act as a development magnet to other industries keen to take advantage of the renewable heat and power output."

Should the proposals be accepted, construction at the site would begin in autumn 2011 and would become fully operational by 2015.
