The proposed reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) should not reduce food production levels, it has been claimed.
NFU president Peter Kendall has urged the government to help develop a policy which promotes food production and does not focus solely on environmental issues, reports fwi.co.uk.
Speaking at a meeting during the Conservative Party Conference, he told Defra ministers: "There have been comments made by all sorts of political parties about the need to move towards spending money on preserving the environment.
"We want a CAP that helps us be more productive and competitive at the same time as looking after the environment."
Defra secretary Caroline Spelman has claimed that European Union (EU) ministers are already looking to reduce the amount of regulations faced by farmers which can restrict productivity.
Proposals for the reform of the CAP will be heard by the EU next year, with the body then set to make a decision on the new policy measures which will be introduced from 2013.
