Richmond-upon-Thames council is aiming to increase its recycling rates from flats and estates by up to 16 per cent, it has been revealed.

The local authority is set to launch a trial collection scheme in Hampton and Richmond next week (October 11th) which would reduce the number of recycling bins for flats and estates.

Currently, residents are faced with several different containers to put their recyclables in but the new simplified system would use only two – mixed fibre or mixed containers.

Councillor Virginia Morris, Richmond council's cabinet member for environment, revealed that the project is the latest step in the council's recycling programme.

She said: "Local people in this trial should find it much quicker, and if the test run increases the volume of waste collected, it will be another major step in the right direction."

Should the six week pilot be a success, the council will roll out the programme throughout all of the area's flats and estates – increasing recycling rates by 16 per cent.
