Scotland's first new distillery in 30 years is good news for grain farmers, it has been suggested.

According to Farmers Weekly, the £40 million Roseisle malt whisky distillery will require large amounts of grain from Scottish producers.

As a result, demand could be strong for bulk handling equipment used in the harvesting and storage of cereal.

The new distillery, opened by drinks company Diageo, has a production capacity of ten million litres of whisky a year.

NFU Scotland vice-president Allan Bowie told the news provider the distillery owner was "at pains to make known its commitment to Scottish farmers and to the quality Scottish grain those farmers produce".

According to Pro Brewer, approximately 100kg of grain is required to make 600 litres of 'mash', from which 80 litres of whiskey can be produced.

Subsequently, the plant's demand for Scottish grain could be as high as 12,500 tonnes a year.

Recently, research from HGCE indicated that selecting the right crop varieties could help brewers produce more alcohol from grain.
