n Northern Ireland (NI) could require more bulk material handling equipment after it secured a contract with a road-building company.

Belfast-based Whitemountain Quarries has signed a five-year deal with Eurovia to supply gridstone – a key component of asphalt used to maintain roads in southern England.

Mark Kelly, managing director of Whitemountain Quarries, expressed his delight at securing the move and claimed it would boost local industry.

He said: "This supply agreement will help to ensure the long-term sustainability of the site, as well as opening up new channels for business.

"We see it as a positive sign for Northern Ireland's construction materials industry."

The gridstone extracted from Whitemountain's quarry in Ballystockart will be shipped to various production sites across the UK including London, East Anglia and Humberside.
