The British animal feed sector could benefit from plans to achieve long-term profitability in the UK beef market.

The National Farmer's Union (NFU) is set to produce a strategy to help guard against the volatility of prices and help ensure the future of the British beef industry.

Animal feed producers could profit from the move as they currently provide a large proportion of their produce to the cattle farmers.

Alistair Mackintosh, livestock board chairman at the NFU, claimed the document must both highlight the current failings within the market and produce solutions

He said: "I envisage this strategy document will offer a number of potential solutions which will then be used to address the present supply chain failings.

"It will also be used as a positive tool in discussions with the whole supply chain as well as politicians and other key decision makers."

Mr Mackintosh added that it is essential to determine how to improve efficiency and productivity before the upcoming reform of the Common Agricultural Policy.
