A new guide highlighting the uses of by-products from the anaerobic digestion process has been published.
An anaerobic digestion facility will break down organic matter in the absence of oxygen to produce biogas and a by-product known as digestate.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) has underlined the benefits of using this digestate, or 'biofertiliser', instead of inorganic fertilisers made from fossil-fuels.
Dr Clare Lukehurst, Dr Peter Frost and Teodorita al Seadi at the UK branch of the IEA all researched the technology and claimed it can fulfil a range of "policy needs".
The study concludes: "For example, biogas can be used to displace fossil fuels otherwise used for heating, electricity and transport.
"In addition, digestate is an easy to use biofertiliser that can be used to replace fossil fuels that otherwise would be used for fertiliser manufacture and its transport around the world."
Typical Guttridge equipment used in the anaerobic digestion industry includes: elevators – bucket elevators – valves
