The Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) will survive the government cull of quangos, it has been revealed.

A spokeswoman for WRAP confirmed that the resource efficiency body is "not a quango" as it is an independent organisation with executives appointed by its board and not government ministers.

The news will be welcomed by those in the recycling and refuse industries as WRAP provides a lot of funding and advice for private and public companies in these sectors.

Although it was also revealed that the body would not be abolished in next week's Spending Review, the spokeswoman did claim it was expecting budget cuts.

She told letsrecycle.com: "Defra has reviewed all its arm's length bodies and WRAP was included in this work.

"WRAP expects to be subject to budgetary cuts as part of Whitehall's Comprehensive Spending Review that will be announced on 20th October."
