Recycling rates in Northern Ireland have increased over the past 12 months, according to new research.

The Department of Environment (DOE) has revealed that the country recycled 39.7 per cent of household waste between April and June 2010, compared to 38.5 per cent during the same period last year.

The new data means the recycling rate in Northern Ireland for the year ending June 2010 reached 35.3 per cent, up from 35.15 per cent in the previous year.

Edwin Poots, Northern Ireland's environment minister, claimed the govenremnt will work with local authorities to significantly improve recycling rates.

He said: "While those councils with higher rates of recycling will have more modest rises in the future, it is essential that the councils at the lower end of the recycling table raise their game significantly over the next few years."

Despite the figures, Northern Ireland still recycles less municipal waste than Scotland, Wales and England.
