More steel and plastics could be recycled in the UK over the next two years after new recycling targets were released.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has published its target recycling rates for 2011 and 2012, with plastics and steel both rising from 29 per cent to 32 per cent and 69 per cent to 71 per cent respectively.

Defra confirmed that these levels were the minimum required if Britain is to meet the EU Packaging Waste Directive targets.

"The targets will ensure that the UK continues to meet EU Directive targets and are similar to the targets for the last two years.

"Targets beyond 2012 will be set following the Waste Review, the findings of which are due to be published in spring 2011," Defra said in a statement.

The department added that it had to increase plastic recycling rates as the UK was in danger of failing to meet its set target for plastic packaging.
