An application for an energy-from-waste (EfW) facility in Oxfordshire has been accepted by the local authorities, 12 months after proposals were initially rejected.

Plans to build a £650 million incinerator near Ardley that will be capable of burning up to 200,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste every year have been ratified by Oxfordshire County Council.

The council's planning and regulation committee voted ten to four to approve the Viridor scheme, despite opposition from local residents.

It is expected that the EfW facility will generate between 24MW of electricity, while helping the county towards its residual waste reduction targets.

Councillor Ian Hudspeth, head of growth and infrastructure, said that the plant would be able to reduce Oxfordshire's yearly landfill to "virtually zero".

"There's a strong and clear need for a facility to provide an alternative to landfill," he said.

"Today's decision is a landmark moment in the process for establishing that facility and a key milestone in our wider efforts to tackle waste across the county."
