Liverpool's reputation as one of the UK's top pharmaceutical manufacturing centres has been further enhanced by the news that a leading US drugs company is set to invest in the city.

Earlier in the year, it was confirmed that Watson Pharmaceuticals had agreed a deal to acquire Liverpool's own Eden Biodesign.

Now, the Liverpool Daily Post has reported that a programme of expansion is to be launched at Eden's National Biomanufacturing Centre in Speke as work gets underway to fulfil Watson's five-year contract to develop the fertility treatment Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH).

According to the newspaper, some $100 million (£63 million) is to be invested in the city, with dozens of new specialist scientific positions to be created over the next few months.

Announcing the news, Dr Derek Ellison, Eden chief operating officer, was quoted by the newspaper as saying: "This investment strengthens Liverpool's place as the UK's leading biopharmaceutical centre."

He added: "What is good for us is the investment in the latest equipment here."

This comes as the cost of pharmaceutical products in Ireland has fallen by 0.8 per cent over the past month.
