Tobacco manufacturers operating in the UK may soon be required to adjust their factory machinery to produce non-branded packaging.

Under plans being considered by the coalition government's health secretary Andrew Lansley, all tobacco products could soon have to be packed in brown paper wrappers, rather than "glitzy designs" in a bid to discourage youngsters from taking up the habit.

Outlining his plans, the minister explained that anything that will help cut the number of smokers in the UK would "benefit the population" as a whole, though so far he has refused to commit to any specific timescale for putting such ideas into practice.

"The evidence is clear that packaging helps to recruit smokers, so it makes sense to consider having less attractive packaging," he noted.

These comments have already been welcomed by health campaigners, with anti-smoking groups backing-up Mr Lansley's arguments that young people find colourful, branded packaging appealing.

Meanwhile, in the north-west of England, the Wirral NHS has launched its latest anti-smoking drive with the support of the Wirral News.
