Moray Council in Scotland has stepped up its fight against a local distillery claiming more than £180 million in a long-running compensation case.

The Benromach Distillery, which produces whiskey, launched its case for compensation back in July 2009 claiming that the local authority's £20.9 million Burns of Mosset flood prevention scheme will have a detrimental effect on its water supply.

While the owner of the facility, Gordon and MacPhail, has conceded that something needs to be done to protect around 850 local homes from the ongoing threat of floods, any such work will be carried out at "a significant long-term cost" to the firm.

Now, the Press and Journal has revealed that Moray Council is looking to hire a whiskey expert to support its argument that, even with the flood defence system in place, there will be sufficient water for the whiskey distillery process to continue largely as before.

Should both parties fail to reach an agreement, the matter will be resolved by the court.

This comes soon after the Suffolk brewer Adnams opened a new distillery geared towards gin, whiskey and vodka production.
