The manufacturing sector in the north-east of England has successfully evolved from being solely focused on ship-building, with its modern diversity helping it to enjoy better prospects than other parts of the UK, it has been claimed.
The latest nebusiness award scheme, which as in previous years is being run with Business Link in the North East, has established a new manufacturing category in recognition of the strength of the sector, the Journal reported.
In particular, the award category will be geared towards highlighting the range of manufacturing activities taking place in the region right now, with ship-building having been replaced by industries such as renewable energy and technology.
Indeed, the newspaper notes that this evolution has helped ensure that manufacturing has remained as the "engine house" of the north-east economy and well-equipped to meet growing demand from low-cost economies.
News of the new award scheme comes just days after the north-east manufacturing sector was boosted as the Offshore Group Newcastle announced it is to create 1,000 new jobs as it works on a new £150 million North Sea oil platform.
