Britain's farmers are to be given a helping hand to increase their overall wheat yields over the next 20 years.

Already, the Best of British Oilseeds (BoBO) initiative from Masstock SMART Farming has helped boost commercial oilseed rape production since it was launched seven years ago.

Now, the Farmers' Guardian has confirmed that a new Best of British Wheat scheme is to be rolled out alongside it, with the aim of helping UK farmers boost their annual yields by at least two per cent per year over the next two decades.

As with the oilseed rape initiative, the scheme will see farmers provided with information and practical help focusing on issues such as crop protection and the benefits of certain types of machinery.

Speaking to the publication, initiative co-ordinator David Neale explained that five key areas in wheat management have been identified and these will form the focal point of efforts over the next year.

"These include more integrated grass-weed management, better performance in challenging situations (including second wheat) and maximising crop quality and consistency," he said.

Earlier in the month, the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organisation warned that wheat production needs to increase by 3.5 per cent next year in order to avoid prices hitting record highs.
