Businesses in the UK which voluntarily report their emissions tend to build up better relationships with their customers and investors, according to a new report.

The Department for the Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs found that recording emissions can make investors more reassured of a company's standing.

Researchers found that regular reporting had a knock-on effect of engaging more employees with green issues and changing the behaviour of workers.

Environment minister Lord Henley said on the findings: "I am pleased to see that the many companies already voluntarily involved in reporting greenhouse gas emissions are finding the process beneficial to their business and investors.

"I am also delighted to see that the act of reporting is encouraging attempts to reduce emissions."

It is expected that the findings of the report will be used to determine whether emissions reporting should become compulsory.

The company GlaxoSmithKline this week announced that it would be opening two new plants in the UK.

Earlier in the year, it made a public commitment to sustainability initiatives, achieving a score of 94.18 out of 100 last months for its environmental initiatives in three areas.

These include environmental impact, green policies and the reputation survey.
