Scottish food and drink firms are leading the way in terms of increasing manufacturing productivity and efficiency.
The Scottish Manufacturing Advisory Service (SMAS) has celebrated its 500th project, with one in four of the business improvement projects it undertakes being for food and drink companies.
Crawford Gillies, chairman of Scottish Enterprise, which is behind the SMAS, commented: "With latest figures showing that UK manufacturing slowed in September following five months of expansion, now is the time for manufacturers to seek more efficiencies and productivity from their operations."
SMAS projects see a team of expert manufacturing advisors spend 3,400 days with a company, working on new ways of working which can save money and improve or replace existing processes.
In the past five years it has helped to generate £56 million of productivity benefits, £12.83 billion of which were in the food and drink sector.
Last month, a new scheme was set up to help British farmers increase their wheat yield.
According to the Famers' Guardian, the new Best of British Wheat scheme will be rolled out alongside the Best of British Oilseeds initiative from Masstock SMART Farming.
