If greenhouse gas reporting is made compulsory for companies, it should be as part of wider review of climate change policies, it has been claimed.

According to EEF, the manufacturers' organisation, making greenhouse gas reporting compulsory could place additional burdens on companies without helping to meet climate change goals, unless the move is coupled with a change in policy.

EEF head of climate & environment policy, Gareth Stace, said: "If government goes down the mandatory route it should do so only as part of a wider review of climate change policy which delivers genuine simplification. Otherwise it risks being viewed as yet another layer of bureaucracy."

He added that mandatory reporting should not be "overly prescriptive".

A recent report commissioned by the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs and carried out by PricewaterhouseCoopers and the Carbon Disclosure Project found that many companies experienced business gains after voluntarily reporting their emissions.

Around 14 per cent of the companies made energy savings in excess of £200,000 per year.
