A green energy firm has been granted permission to build a waste-to-energy-plant in a Welsh town.

Enviroparks will construct the £120 million site in Rhondda Cynon Taf, despite objections from nearby residents, the BBC has reported.

It claims that the site will provide enough energy for around 40,000 homes in the region.

In addition to this, it will process around 240,000 tonnes of waste annually, acting as a recycling facility for the area.

Villagers in Penderyn and Rhigos have said that the site will ruin the view from the Cynon Valley, though the application was approved by the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority.

The venture is expected to generate around 400 temporary and permanent jobs for locals.

Roger Hewitt, Enviroparks Chairman, commented: "We are very pleased that we have now completed the planning application process and can now move forward. We remain confident that site works will commence in 2011."
