A Japanese firm has announced that it is to invest £100 million into a green energy centre off the Scotish coast, which could be good news for firms in the green manufacturing sector.

Mitsubishi Power Systems Europe has said that the site will be dedicated to engineering, focusing primarily on research into offshore energy.

Commenting on the venture, Scotland's first minister Alex Salmond said: "Scotland is a leader in the development of clean green energy and boasts a world-class research and development base that is pioneering technologies that will have a global impact on combating climate change."

The chief executive of Scottish Enterprise Lena Wilson added that the new investment again strengthened Scotland's standing on research and development in the green energy sector.

The investment by Mitsubishi will take place over a period of five years.

Last week, the Sunday Telegraph reported that the UK could be set to benefit from a new generation of wind turbines taller than 150 metres.
