The government must do more to ensure to boost the growth of the manufacturing sector in the UK, according to one industry organisation.
The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has highlighted the success of the sector in growing at almost double the rate of the rest of the UK economy since 1997.
However, the CBI said that targets for expansion must be competitive with international manufacturing sectors – despite its relative success, the growth rate of four per cent is among the lowest in the OECD countries.
The trade body has proposed that the government focus on three areas. These include raising the growth rate to compare with global leaders such as South Korea and the US, meeting the OECD average for manufactured exports and becoming a leader in an innovation.
Commenting on the organisation's three-fold proposal for growth, CBI director-general designate John Cridland said: "We want the Government to be ambitious: focus its support on the sectors with most export growth potential, and improve the UK's competitiveness as a place to invest."
