The government has outlined further plans on how it will boost production in the energy-from-waste sector.

Lord Taylor, a spokesman at the Department for Energy and Climate Change, told attendees at the Associate Parliamentary Sustainable Resource Group (APSRG) that energy-from-waste is a crucial part of the government’s overall renewable strategy, Let's Recycle has reported.

The UK will have to produce some 15 per cent of its energy from renewable sources by 2020.

Some of the incentives to be given to the sector include a planning bias, the retention of existing incentives such as renewable heat tariffs and an overhaul of the electricity market to favour greener industries.

Lord Taylor also addressed concerns about the feedstock for the sector, which will depend on high quantities of unrecycled waste.

He said that investors would need some guarantees of a stream of waste coming into the system, despite concerns from those in the recycling industry that it could impact on their business.
