Sales of UK exports went up by 22.2 per cent in the 12 months leading up to September, according to new government figures.

HM Revenue & Customs has reported that the total value of exports was £252,103 million, meaning that was a year-on-year increase of £27,482 million.

The manufacturing sector and other industries in England saw the largest increase in exports over the period of the report.

Exports were worth an additional £183,053 year-on-year in this region.

It was the only country in the UK to see exports rise, other than Scotland whose exports grew by a marginal 3.4 per cent.

Wales and Northern Ireland saw exports fall, by six per cent and 6.1 per cent respectively.

Despite the comparatively bleak picture for some areas, no region of England or country in the UK showed an increase in importing activity.

The figures back up recent data from the Confederation of British Industry, which revealed that manufacturing confidence is at its highest since the start of the year.
