Farmers have been given three months to throw out any banned pesticides and biocides under a trade body initiative.

The amnesty has been motivated by the recent banning of several products by the EU, the National Farmers' Union announced.

It will run from January 3rd to March 14th next year, as part of the bigger Project SOE.

Project SOE is an initiative that aims to teach farmers and other manufacturers on how to store equipment used in relation to chemicals in a safe and sustainable way.

Commenting on the move, NFU vice-president Gwyn Jones said: "A huge range of products have lost UK approval as pesticides and biocides for a variety of reasons over the last few years.

"This is a great opportunity to check your stores and dispose of anything that is out of date or no longer legal."

The Department for the Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs (Defra) announced this week that farmers and greenhouse owners will not have to alert nearby residents if they are spraying chemicals.
