Manufacturers in the UK need to have more support from the government to grow, one industry commentator has said.

This is the opinion of Terry Scuoler, of Manufacturing Digital, following the publication of the government's Growth Review.

Published at the end of November, the government promised to back industries which show serious growth potential, particularly highlighting the importance of manufacturing.

Mr Scuoler writes: "Manufacturers themselves have a responsibility to help change the image of the sector.

"This involves a proactive approach to parents, teachers, to the media and to young people who are their workforce of the future."

In addition, the government should also encourage more manufacturers to export and facilitate this process by stripping away red tape from the sector.

A separate report from the British Chambers of Commerce published earlier this week reported that the most common reasons firms cited for not exporting was that they were satisfied with domestic trade.
