Productivity in the manufacturing sector has grown faster than across the UK economy on average, new government data has shown.

The third quarter report from the Office for National Statistics revealed that productivity has grown eight per cent year-on-year in the sector.

In contrast, the national average for all industries in the 12 months leading up October was 1.7 per cent.

Manufacturing also saw the biggest quarterly rise, with productivity going up by 0.8 per cent on the three months leading up to the end of July.

The services sector only saw output per job increase by 1.0 per cent year-on-year, with no quarterly change in figures.

Separate reports have indicated that the manufacturing sector is going strength-for-strength, despite tough economic conditions.

A report from EEF, the manufacturers' organisation, found that pay data in the quarter up until November found that pay had gone up very slightly to two per cent.ADNFCR-2798-ID-800312344-ADNFCR
