Campaigners are planning to protest against the construction of a £640 million waste plant on the outskirts of Glasgow.

The site, run by Lifetime Recycling Village, is to process just over one million tonnes of industrial and commercial waste from nearby businesses.

Speaking to the Scottish Herald, Friends of the Earth campaigner Duncan McLaren said: "We are intensely sceptical of these plans. At first sight they appear better than a conventional mass-burn incinerator, but in practice could share many of the same problems."

According to the paper, the owners of the site have already offered to buy out nearby properties at above-market prices.

In addition to this, the energy produced from burning waste could power 100,000 homes, giving them cheaper bills.

However, the paper cites concerns from residents that the scale of activity at the site in Newton Mearns will mean that there will be constant disruption nearby.

In a separate interview with Scottish Herald, one of the owners of the site said that given the polluted location of the site, it was likely that the air going out would be 'cleaner' than the air going in.
