An energy-from-waste firm is currently sourcing its feedstock from neighbouring councils because of concerns about availability of material.
Higher rates of recycling and wider economic conditions have contributed to diminishing levels of waste, Veolia Environmental Services has claimed.
It has said that its energy recovery facility in Sheffield is likely to see a serious shortage within the next six years, if levels of recycling continue to increase at their current rate.
The firm has applied for approval to the local authority to bring more waste into the facility, and highlighted the benefits of keeping more material out of landfill.
Commenting on the application, the director of Veolia Environmental Services in Sheffield Nigel Williams said: "The energy recovery facility currently receives some waste from neighbouring areas and the proposed change is aimed at maintaining the facility to capacity so that in turn, heat and electricity generation is optimised."
