Manufacturers in the food and drink sector are more optimistic about the economic climate than a year ago, new research has shown.

A survey by the website Food Production Daily has revealed that some 63.5 per cent are more positive, in comparison to just over a quarter (28.1 per cent) who disagree.

However, nearly eight in ten (79.8 per cent) are still finding commodity and packaging material price increases hard to offset.

Cash flow continues to be an ongoing issue, with nearly two-thirds (61.8 per cent) who think it will affect their margins.

Factory layout and design remained an important focus for just over half (51.6 per cent), while 64.5 per cent planned to improve the hygienic design of equipment.

Last week, British Polythene Industries noted that the material costs remain a serious concern for the group.

In a statement, the organisation said: "Raw material costs and availability continue to be an issue and our suppliers are seeking further increases for January."
