The government needs to make sure tariffs are high enough on the renewable heat incentive (RHI) to incentivise farmers, according to one industry analyst.

Speaking to Farmer's Weekly Interactive, the National Farmers' Union's chief energy advisor Jonathan Scurlock praised the RHI scheme which will
reward farmers for producing their own energy from sources as diverse as woodchips, straw and rotation coppice.

Despite concerns about cutbacks to tariffs, Mr Scurlock added that government pressures to meet European Union renewable energy targets are
likely to keep tariffs attractive to the farming industry.

He told the site: "The government is anxious to stimulate renewable heat and will be monitored and audited by the European Commission every two
years on its progress, so it would be highly inappropriate to offer tariffs that are not sufficient to generate an enthusiastic response."

Farmers may be encouraged to invest in biomass processing equipment, such as heavy duty and industrial conveyors, under the renewable heat incentive scheme.
