Changes to regulations to facilitate the recognition of efforts by food manufacturers to reduce salt levels when processing food in mixers have been welcomed.
The banning of key phrases such as 'no added salt' is crucial for showing how far the food and drink industry has come in addressing health concerns, one industry figure has said.
In an interview with Food Manufacture.co.uk, the Food and Drink Federation’s director of food safety and science Barbara Gallani praised the move by the European Union which means that manufacturers can cite smaller salt reductions on packaging.
She said that the proposed introduction of a claim of 15 per cent reduction in salt and sugars "will allow companies to continue to communicate to consumers about the step-by-step reformulation of products over several years".
The move by the EU could incentivise food and drink manufacturers to take steps to reduce foods as their efforts will be recognised in nutritional labelling.
Farmers could gain from the move which will change how food is processed. It could be worthwhile investing in new equipment for processing which could include mixers and flexible bulk containers.
