Burton MP Andrew Griffiths has warned that changes must be made to the taxation system in order to safeguard firms in the brewing industry.
Mr Griffiths led a delegation of industry figure to a meeting with the economic secretary to the treasury, Justine Greening, the Burton Mail reports.
He told the publication that talks has been "positive", and the delegation left with hope that a resolution could be achieved.
Mr Griffiths explained: "Clearly the industry has suffered massively due to the taxation policies of previous governments.
"We now have a situation where taxation has increased by more than 60 per cent on beer in recent years."
Mr Griffiths went on to claim that without these changes, many brewing companies would have to sell their steel containers and close down.
The Confederation of British Industry recently called upon the government to create an environment that is more conducive to growth in the manufacturing sector.
