A school in Totnes is being held up as an example to all other educational institutions in the country, as it switches on it new bio-mass boiler.

The facility will be heated by containers of bio-fuel used in a bio-mass boiler, in a bid to set a sustainability example to all schools and companies, according to the Herald Express.

As well as installing the bio-mass technology, the school will be using solar panels to help generate electricity to power the school, and give the students first-hand experience of green energy projects.

College business manager Chris Harris told the publication that sustainability is a key part of the school's agenda, and it is hoped that other educational institutes and manufacturing firms could follow their lead.

"This is the way all schools should be moving forward, engaging the community in a sustainable future which will encourage students to be more responsible and choose options for sustainable careers in the future," added local county councillor Paula Black.

National Farmers' Union's chief energy advisor Jonathan Scurlock recently welcomed government plans to offer farmers incentives to invest in bio-mass fuel creation.
