The devastating floods in Queensland could have a significant impact on the UK baking industry, it has been claimed.

As large swathes of farmland in the Australian state have been submerged, fears have grown that the world's fourth-largest wheat producer will be unable to deliver its harvest, the Daily Telegraph reports.

In response, the CVhicago Board of Trade noted that the price of wheat for March delivery has risen by over three per cent.

Gordon Polson, a director at the Federation of Bakers in the UK, warned that the cost of bread production could soon increase.

He told the publication: "There is no doubt that if there is a longer trend of higher wheat prices, this will be reflected in [bakers'] costs.

"If there are a couple of poor harvests in the world that will obviously impact prices."

Manufacturers across the globe have also been warned that the price of coal could increase as a result of the Queensland floods, as the state produces around half of the world's exported coking coal.
