The rising cost of fuel is hitting firms in the baking industry hard, it has been suggested.

With fuel duty increasing at the start of the year by 0.76 pence per litre, closely followed by the 2.5 per cent rise in VAT, the average price of diesel has now reached 134.2 pence per litre, Bakery Info reports.

As such the cost of purchasing commodities is really beginning to affect financial margins, according to the publication.

Neville Morse, managing director of Gloucester-based Jane's Pantry, says that all these extra costs are having to be passed on to the consumer.

"We have put the prices of the goods sold in vans up ten per cent to cover the extra VAT, fuel duty and general increase in fuel costs," he told the news provider.

The Daily Telegraph recently warned that the floods in Queensland could push the cost of wheat upwards, further increasing the expense to the UK baking industry.
