Recycling firms can play a key role in helping to drive the recovery forward, as Durham County Council has proved.

The authority's waste management group has managed to return to profit in the last year, despite the relative weakness of the economy.

Increasing levels of recycled material being produced is helping to prevent large amounts of waste heading to landfill, the council claims.

Steve Scott, the chief executive of the completely council-owned Premier Waste Management, explained that the firm is intending to use the funds to invest in its machines and infrastructure.

"We have … continued to invest in our recycling infrastructure such as our in-vessel composting system and our materials recycling facility in Sunderland," he explained.

LetsRecycle.com recently announced that a new wood standard had been drawn up that will help recycling firms to consistently meet the quality standards required to sell their reusable material on to other industries.
