A new standard has been drafted that could help recycling companies work out how waste wood should be sorted on their conveyors.

The draft PAS 111 sets out the minimum criteria and processing requirements that wood recycling companies need to meet if they want to sell on their products to other markets, LetsRecycle.com reports.

Sectors such as biomass energy generation, animal bedding, mulches, pathway creation and panelboard manufacture are all run on the use of recycled wood.

The website suggests that around 4.5 million tonnes of waste wood was generated in the UK in 2008, with just two million tonnes being recovered or recycled.

It claims that the new PAS 111 should help ensure that more wood ands up on the conveyors of recycling firms, as well as proving them with a clearer understanding of what can be used.

Government recycling agency Wrap recently announced it still plans to meet its recycling targets for wood and other reusable materials, despite being hit with a 28 per cent budget cut.
